A few pinecones can make a Christmas tree feel like a little piece of woodland. This COSTWAY pencil tree combines them with snow-flocked foliage, giving you a decorative starting point that needs surprisingly little extra dressing. The green branches, white snow effect and brown cones sit comfortably with natural materials and traditional Christmas colours.

This version stands approximately 150cm high and measures 50cm across. It is tall enough to feel like a proper floor-standing tree, with a narrow enough spread for a corner beside the stairs or a smaller living room. The pinecones are part of the tree; lights and any extra ornaments are additions of your own.

A narrow shape that still needs shaping

The branches use a hinged construction, making the sections easier to open and close. Once the pole sections are fitted together, take time to separate the foliage and bring the tips into place. A tree that looks compressed on arrival can have a very different outline once each branch has been given some attention.

Buyers of the 5ft version have particularly liked its fit in smaller corners and under a staircase. They describe good branch coverage after opening it out, and some felt that a simple set of lights was almost enough decoration on its own. Keep your own display balanced by checking the outline before adding ornaments.

Try a quieter decorating scheme

With the snow and cones already providing texture, this is a lovely candidate for restrained decorating. Warm fairy lights, a handful of small wooden stars and narrow ribbon could be all you need. For a richer look, add deep red berries or miniature gold baubles while leaving a few snowy tips visible.

Large ornaments can look out of proportion on a pencil tree. One owner of this size preferred smaller decorations, which is a useful approach if your collection was originally bought for a broad fir. Place a few favourite pieces where they can hang freely, rather than forcing everything into the available gaps.

Stand, assembly and the end of the season

A metal stand is included, with a folding design for packing away. Open it on a flat surface and make sure the tree is properly seated before you begin dressing it. Check the finished balance as you add decorations, particularly if the front carries more ornaments than the back.

Snow flocking can leave loose particles during assembly, so a sheet underneath makes the initial tidy-up easier. This is an indoor decorative tree, intended to bring a snowy atmosphere inside. At the end of Christmas, remove your lights and ornaments, close the hinged branches gently and store the dry sections with the pinecones protected from crushing.
