Once the garland is arranged just as you like it, reaching behind the greenery to change the lights can be awkward. This Trepcrow design includes a remote control, letting you adjust the effect without disturbing the snowy branches or berry sprays. It is a useful detail for a mantel display, a high shelf or a garland running along the outside of a staircase.

The garland measures 270cm, approximately nine feet, and combines green PVC foliage with snowy accents, pine cones and red berries. Fifty LEDs provide white and coloured lighting options, with eight modes, ten brightness settings and a timer. Three AA batteries are required. The decoration has a substantial feel, weighing around 1.82kg, so plan secure support points before putting it up.

The garland already has plenty of detail, so a small number of separate mantel ornaments can be enough to finish the scene.

Set it up before fixing it in place

Start by opening out the foliage on a clear surface. Customer feedback is positive about the fullness after shaping, but the packed branches still need separating to achieve that result. Work around the larger decorations gently and keep the light wire free from tight twists. A loose, irregular outline usually makes the snowy tips look more natural than arranging them all at the same angle.

Test the remote, timer and preferred lighting mode before hanging the garland. Keep the battery box supported and accessible even when you expect to use the remote most of the time. Use fixings appropriate to the weight and surface, and add support along the middle where needed instead of asking the end points to carry the entire display.

For outdoor decorating, choose a sheltered setting and follow the included instructions for the electrical parts. Indoors, keep the foliage away from active heat sources and preserve a clear handrail on stairs. After Christmas, remove the batteries and store the remote with the garland so it is easy to find. Pack the snowy branches loosely to protect the berries and reduce the amount of reshaping needed next season.
