If you have a high shelf that needs a little softness, a metre of trailing ivy can make a pleasing difference. This dark English ivy from Best Artificial has broad, pointed leaves and a generous downward fall, giving a plain cabinet or wall planter a more settled, leafy look. It is supplied as foliage for your own container, so the finished display can be as traditional or contemporary as you like.

A full trail of English ivy leaves

Each plant measures approximately 100cm long and carries around 190 leaves. The individual leaves are roughly 5–6cm across, creating a bolder effect than tiny-leaved ivy. Their fabric finish works with the fine branching stems to give the plant some variation in texture when viewed from around the room.

Dark English is the selected foliage style. Other ivy colours and leaf styles are available, which may be useful if you are planning a wider decorating scheme. For this version, think of a green cascade with enough visual weight to stand out against a light wall, pale shelving or a simple painted dresser.

Made for your own arrangement

A planting spike at the base allows you to anchor the ivy in a pot or decorative arrangement. No container is supplied. Use a firm fixing inside the planter and make sure the planter itself is stable before letting the long stems fall over the edge.

The foliage does not need to hang in a perfectly even curtain. Separate the branches carefully, let some fall further than others and turn a few leaves towards the room. A little sideways spread near the top usually helps the plant look less like a bundle of straight strings.

The long drop makes this an appealing option for a bookcase, a tall kitchen unit or a wall-mounted planter. It can also soften a display shelf above a desk, provided the stems stay clear of lamps, equipment and anything you need to reach regularly. A little care when unpacking

Unwind the stems patiently and avoid tugging at the leaf attachments. Allow compressed foliage time to settle, then make small adjustments once the plant is in place. Dust occasionally with a soft brush, supporting the stems as you work. There is no need for water, plant food or regular trimming to keep this ivy green.
