Not all artificial hanging baskets are the same! Here are a few tips to keep in mind when you're choosing your baskets:
If you're not already a hanging basket convert, you might be wondering why have them in the first place. After all, artificial hanging baskets might be low maintenance but no hanging baskets is, well, no maintenance!
Hanging baskets add a touch of colour and style to outdoor areas - whether it's the front of the house, the back garden or the entrance to your business. They bring colour to higher areas where it is more difficult to place plants and flowers. They add interest to dull areas and the more extravagant baskets can bring a lavish flourish to an entrance. Hanging baskets are also a great way to add something different and new each season (a bit like changing up your bedding plants).
Artificial hanging baskets have so many advantages - the biggest being that they're low maintenance. Forget watering, feeding and trimming - they take care of themselves. Another big advantage is that you don't have to purchase new plants throughout the year - contrast this with a regular hanging basket which will usually need the flowers changing at least twice a year with the seasons.

Artificial hanging baskets come in a lot of different sizes and sometimes the photos can be deceiving. If you're looking for a nice full hanging basket for outside of your door, you'll want at least 30cm in diameter, not including the flowers. Check the measurements before you order!
Some hanging baskets only have the artificial flowers in the top of the basket. This gives the basket a neat look, although cheaper quality baskets can look rather bare.
The ball type artificial hanging baskets have flowers flowing in all directions, not just out of the top - so you'll find there are small holes for flowers on the underside of the basket. This gives you an all round colour and foliage display.
You'll also find trailing hanging baskets where there is a diplay on top and typically foliage coming over the edge. These can be very realistic and difficult to distinguish from the real thing!
Finally, you'll see that some hanging baskets come in different shapes such as hearts or cones. These are simply down to personal preference - you might like the more traditional looking artificial hanging basket, or you might prefer the cone shape which has a modern feel. These may have just flowers in the top or they may have foliage that trails down the sides.
Artificial hanging baskets come in a wide range of colours and your selection will depend on personal preference. Silk flowers tend to look the most realistic, but plastic plants can sometimes be more resistant to the weather and they are still difficult to distinguish from the real thing unless you're up close.
Colours can be true-to-life or bright and gaudy - the choice is yours.
In our opinion, silk flowers look the most realistic - but the plastic alternatives are not very far behind. Foliage varies a great deal in terms of what looks realistic - make sure you check out a product's close up pictures so that you're happy with how close the hanging basket looks to the real thing.
Remember also that it's not often people come up and stick their face into the basket. The effect is usually appreciated from at least half a metre away. So yes, you might be able to tell the plants are fake if you stroke them or inspect them closely, but typically your visitors won't do that.
Unless you're looking to buy an artificial hanging basket for indoors, you want to know that your basket is built to last no matter what the weather is like! A good quality basket will be durable but the most important factor to look out for is UV fade resistance - as faded flows look neither pretty nor realistic.
Most baskets come with a chain attached already. On the cheaper baskets (i.e. not the ones we sell), this can be made of plastic or poor quality metal. The best quality chains will be galvanised to prevent rusting - this refers to the process of them being dipped in a protective coating (usually zinc applied over steel or iron) to stop the rust. Buying an artificial hanging basket with a galvanised chain will ensure you get many years of use out of your purchase.
