Sometimes the simplest greenery gives you the most freedom. This Christow spruce garland is plain, unlit and easy to build a colour scheme around, whether you love classic red ribbons or prefer a quieter Christmas with wood, paper and wool decorations. The dual-tone green foliage gives the branches a little variation without adding snow, glitter or fixed ornaments.

This is the 180cm version, approximately six feet long. It weighs around 510g and has a dark green metal hanging loop at each end. The loops offer useful attachment points when you want to suspend it, while the plain branches can also be arranged along a shelf or mantelpiece. Lights, ribbons and other finishing decorations are not included.

A manageable length for a smaller display

Six feet can be a comfortable size for a compact mantel or a short section of banister where a longer garland would leave too much trailing down. Measure the area you want to dress and decide how much of the length should fall at the ends. Even a small curve uses some of the available material, so include that in your plan rather than measuring only the straight shelf.

The green base pairs well with decorations that already mean something to you. Customers have dressed this type of garland with pom-poms, berries and gold ribbon, using the foliage to connect the individual pieces. You might repeat one ribbon colour along the length, then tuck a few smaller ornaments close to the front where they will be visible from the room.

Shape the spruce tips first

Before adding anything, open out the compressed branches. Start at one end and work steadily along, turning some tips upwards and letting others spread sideways. The aim is an irregular, leafy outline rather than a perfectly even cylinder. Checking from a little distance helps you spot any thin areas or branches that are pointing away from the main viewing side.

Customers often appreciate the difference this shaping makes. The foliage is artificial PVC rather than soft moulded real-touch greenery, so choose it for a practical, reusable decorating base rather than expecting the texture of fresh spruce close up. Its plain finish is particularly useful if you want to change the decorative details each year while keeping the same foundation.

Use suitable supports for the finished display, allowing for the extra weight of any ornaments you attach. Keep added light strings separate from the hanging points and follow their own instructions.
